The Scarborough Company produced highly detailed, color-lithographed, folding railroad maps of New York State around the turn of the 20th century (ca. 1903), featuring, townships, counties, and distances between stations. These large-scale, linen-backed maps, from their Boston office, are prized for showing the extensive rail network during the peak, pre-automobile era.
This map cost $5.00 in 1903!
The map includes:
- Rail lines, including mainlines and smaller, suburban electric lines, branch lines,
- Post offices
- Townships, counties, cities and towns
- Distances between rail stations, which were crucial for travelers and commerce
- Steamship lines including those from Jersey City
- 1900 Census populations
These maps are excellent tools for tracing, forgotten, early 20th-century, New York, industrial-era, transport, infrastructure.
This map is Large format, printed on linen and measures 3 1/2 feet x 3 3/4 feet. It folds up into 9 1/2 x 4 3/4.
This map has wear and some tearing in the folds (see pics), but is in remarkable condition for being 123 years old!
Would look incredible framed.
