Complete original portfolio titled The American Adventure, featuring hand-colored color etchings by Al Mettel, produced by Brown & Bigelow of Saint Paul, Minnesota, circa late 1930s–early 1940s.
This is not a later reproduction or offset print set. Each image is a true color etching created from etched copper plates and individually hand-inked and printed on heavy deckle-edge paper. Each plate is pencil-titled at lower left and pencil-signed “Al Mettel” at lower right.
Confirmed plates include:
• Steamboat Days
• Station Stop
• Superstition Mountains – Stage from Phoenix to Florence
• Airborne – Kitty Hawk
The portfolio retains its original Brown & Bigelow presentation materials, including the explanatory text sheets describing the color-etching process and original folder. Light, even age toning is present on some text pages, consistent with age; the etchings themselves show strong color, clean signatures, and intact deckle edges.
A scarce and highly collectible American print portfolio, appealing to collectors of American art, Western imagery, transportation history, and early aviation.
