Barbizon School (in the spirit of Camille Delpy) – Twilight on a pond, oil on canvas signed and dated 1868 – old gilded wood frame
Beautiful little scene of silence and low light: a still body of water, hemmed with reeds, captures the sky in pale blue shades and the first ocher warmth on the horizon. The dark mass of trees stands out against the light, placed like a curtain, with a large central crown which is reflected in the pond. On the bank, a few tufts and tall grass punctuate the foreground, while in the distance a red roof and built silhouettes can be seen behind the foliage. The whole thing exudes a “suspended moment”: the day falls, the water becomes a mirror, and the palette narrows into deep greens, browns and bluish grays.
The touch is attentive and nuanced: glazes and passages blended into the sky and water, more nervous material in the foliage, with a very Barbizonian sense of value (the painting thinks first in tones, then in details). We are close to the poetic climate of the landscape painters of the Corot / Daubigny lineage, and particularly to the register of Hippolyte-Camille Delpy (1842–1910), a painter associated with this sensitivity, trained in the orbit of Daubigny and Corot.
Beautiful old frame in gilded wood, wide frieze profile and row of pearls at the edge. Some visible missing pearls (small occasional losses), without detracting from the general appearance: it remarkably highlights the depth of the landscape and the vibration of the sky.
