Antique French Art Nouveau silver (900/1000) wedding medallion depicting a couple taking their wedding vows at an altar with the inscription: "FIDELITE - BONHEUR" (Fidelity - Happiness). Sculpted by Louis-Michel Petit (1791-1844). Petit signed his work "PETIT F." This is the usual size of a Treizan wedding token: 34mm and is dated on the rim: 1879. The rim also is stamped "ARGENT" and has the Paris Mint logo/symbol. During the mid-to-late 1800s it was customary to give a "Treizan" during a wedding mass which was blessed by the presiding clergy. The Treizan, which later became a medal or wedding token was so called in honor of Jesus Christ and His 12 Apostles. This practice continued until the first half of the 20th century. Condition of this fine French medallion is in excellent used condition w/ blemishes consistent with its age. Please carefully review all photos for detailed surface/rim conditions and markings as they are part and parcel of the description and therefore this medallion is "as is".
These European medallions were composed of a much higher copper content thus rendering crisp details. They were also sculpted by some of the finest artists of their time. Whenever possible I kept the original patina on these beautiful medallions. However, many times I found it necessary to restore the medallions in order to give you the customer a fair and accurate description of their condition and to highlight the intricate details of these fine works of art. Rest assured that the original patina will return naturally within several years (minus the grime, paint, lacquer, ink, rust, etc.). If you prefer to keep them in a more "restored" condition, use a high-quality polishing agent like 'Flitz'.
