Few Virginia units witnessed such wartime adventures as did the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment. Ranging as far afield as Alabama and Pennsylvania, the 25th Virginia rode barefoot and hungry during much of the greatest conflict in our nation’s history. From its inception as the 27th Virginia Cavalry Battalion, until its surrender three weeks after Appomattox as the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, these hard-riding mountaineers from Southwest Virginia inflicted casualties upon U.S. forces completely out of proportion to their actual numbers. Initially recruited as a Ranger command attached to Colonel Robert Trigg and the 54th Virginia Infantry, the unit soon became an autonomous battalion under the leadership of Trigg’s trusted friend, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Alonzo Edmundson. Edmundson led the unit on campaigns into Kentucky during1862, near Petersburg during 1862 and 1863, and into Kentucky again by early 1863. The unit was then divided, on half being led by Edmundson during an 1863-1864 campaign with Brigadier General “Grumble” Jones through east Tennessee and southwest Virginia. The other half under Major Sylvester P. McConnell moved south, fighting as part of a Kentucky Brigade commanded by Brigadier General Hodge which saw intense action, first under Nathan Bedford Forrest, and later while raiding with Joseph Wheeler. By early 1864, the Battalion was reunited in southwest Virginia. Soon they were moved to the Shenandoah Valley where their greatest loss was suffered at the Battle of Piedmont. While participant in the march on Washington, D.D., the unit was officially renamed the 25th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, a designation they kept until their surrender at Cumberland Gap on April 28, 1865.
