An intriguing literary connection... In 1793 Lady Jane Mathew - the mother-in-law of James Austen, eldest brother of novelist Jane Austen, died in Bath, England. An extremely important person in her own right, she was an English Noblewoman and Peer. These gorgeous earrings were created to commemorate her life. In solid 9 karat gold, they're set with a halo of lustrous pearls around locket compartments, glazed with rounded covers and containing locks of hair. Their backs are thick gold, deeply beveled and subtly rounded, and their backs hide a finely hand engraved dedication. Both read 'Rt Hble Lady Jane Mathew Ob.t 21 Aug.t 1793 Æt 68'. But each bears a further inscription, unique and extremely unusual. 'Forgive the wish that would have kept thee here' and 'The time came for thy death, Remembrance remorse' - two poignant, heartfelt messages to a passed love that tug the heartstrings still to this day, 233 years later. With gold shepherd's hook ear wires, they appear to have been adapted in antiquity from a pair of rings or links of a bracelet. Weighing in at 9.6 grams together, they're a mid-large size at 21 mm diameter. They're in superb antique condition, with minimal wear and no loss or damage.
