A vintage set of equal arm brass balance scales, which are calibrated to weigh up to 7lb. They were made in England by De Grave Short & Co Ltd and were owned by East Sussex County Council. They are top quality manufacture with stainless steel pivots at the centre of their beam and also where their chain fittings hang. They come in their original fitted case, which is lined with green felt and measures 23 1/4" or 59 cm wide x 11" or 28 cm deep x 3 3/4" or 9.5 cm high. They are fully marked with their makers and owners name, plus their registration number - 4857 and also include stamp marks on their brass pans, which show they were regularly checked for accuracy, and they were in use during the reign of George VI circa 1948 and Queen Elizabeth II. They are a scarce item, and would have been used by County council inspectors to check retailers and similar busineses weights. They have a lovely finish to their brass work and are in good working condition. Please see photos
