Beautifully thrown and glazed art pottery vase by McCartys Pottery of Marigold, Mississippi. Probably dates from 60-70s, judging from signatures. This one is signed twice--on the bare bottom and on the base rim on the glaze. Finished in a stunning mottled Nutmeg glaze with muted Jade accents here and there. It measures 8" tall, with a 4.5" throat, and swells out to 5.5" wide at the waist. The base measures 3.5" in diameter. This is a heavily thrown piece, weighing in at just under 4 lbs. The shape beautifully emphasizes the varied matte textured surface finish nicely(see video) and the additional signature on the glaze underscores the exterior execution effort. The base is incised with the earlier McCartys Merigold, Miss signature, and a single vertical slash below that. There is no "River" mark, and I'm not sure if it was created by Lew or Pup McCarty. The walls are thick, with prominent finger grooves inside. An interesting and certainly evocative addition to your Southern Art Pottery collection!
