For your consideration is a vintage, 1931, second-place medal for youth sledding awarded to 12-year-old, Carl Freitag, when he and his family were vacationing in Garmisch Partenkrichen, Germany. The event was held at the Sportplatz am Gudiberg (the winter sports area on Gudiberg Mountain).
The medal measures 2,5cm (1 inch) and weighs 6 grams (0.2 ounces).
The accompanying letter from the Partenkirchen Tourist Bureau begins with a quotation from Friedrich Schiller's William Tell: "Früh übt sich, was ein Meister werden will." ["Early practice makes the master."] It goes on to state that the recipient was only 2/5ths of a second behind the winner and expresses hope that, in the future, he will achieve first place. The enclosed little medal will serve as a souvenir of your success and your winter vacation days in Partenkirchen, one of the most beautiful locations in Germany, your fatherland. It ends expressing greetings to the young man's parents and a heartfelt "Sledding Hail!"
CONDITION: The medal is in very good condition: clean and bright (perhaps silver-plate). The accompanying letter is rubbed and soiled with long tears at the creases. PLEASE MOUSE OVER THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION DETAILS.
