This is an authentic late 1940s to early 1950s brown suede field or safari jacket, a classic postwar European design that bridges the gap between military and leisurewear. Made from soft, high-quality suede (likely goat or split cowhide, not horsehide), it features a deep red rayon or acetate lining, a four-button front closure, two chest pockets with buttoned flaps, two lower front flap pockets, and a matching suede belt with a plastic buckle. The styling is typical of the immediate postwar period, with a structured yet relaxed cut, unpadded shoulders, and a slightly longer body length designed for practical, everyday wear.

The construction and materials indicate small-batch or bespoke tailoring. The buttons appear to be casein plastic. Stitching throughout is single-needle and evenly spaced, showing the workmanship of a mid-century tailor rather than mass production. The buttonholes are machine-stitched but not factory-perfect, further supporting the handmade nature of the piece. The lining is hand-finished along the placket and hem, and the belt loops are sewn directly into the side seams, all details consistent with European manufacture between 1948 and 1953.

This piece has had a lot of wear, and definitely needs to be professionally cleaned. It has an old musky odor to it and there are blemishes on the surface of the leather. Both the lining of the jacket and underside of the belt have discoloration. The underside of the belt is torn in an area as well. Refer to photos. It is incredibly soft and comfortable, I have loved this piece during the winter but it’s been in storage for too long so I am passing it on to someone else who will enjoy it. Just needs a bit of care and it’ll last many, many more years!

The jacket remains structurally sound and fully wearable. The suede shows natural aging and light discoloration in some areas, typical of untreated mid-century suede. All original buttons are present and securely attached. The piece has great character and presents beautifully as an authentic mid-century example.

This style is derived from WWII officer and safari jackets adapted for civilian use in the late 1940s. It represents an important transition in menswear toward practical but stylish leisure clothing. Examples like this are increasingly difficult to find, especially in wearable condition.
