FDNY Harlem “Fire Factory” – Engine 58 / Ladder 26
The New York City Fire Department firehouse known as the “Harlem Fire Factory” refers to the quarters of Engine Company 58 and Ladder Company 26 in Harlem. Due to the extremely high number of fires in Harlem during the mid-20th century, the house earned its famous nickname because firefighters were constantly responding to alarms, seemingly producing fire runs around the clock.
Engine 58 was organized in 1893, with Ladder 26 following in 1904, and the two companies later operated together in the same firehouse. Their demanding workload during the peak fire years of New York City helped cement the station’s reputation as one of the busiest and most respected firehouses in the FDNY.
Today, the companies remain active units of the FDNY, carrying on the historic legacy of the legendary Harlem “Fire Factory.”
