This circulated 1949 Jefferson nickel shows a raised die crack on the obverse extending from the rim into the field just past the “9” in the date. The crack begins at the rim and runs inward, a classic mint striking error caused by a fractured die during production.

Die cracks occur when a mint die begins to fail after striking thousands of coins. Coins struck afterward show raised fracture lines like the one seen on this example. These are collectible mint errors and are often sought by variety and error collectors.
