Lovely antique sterling silver filigree card case/purse with sterling chain handle. The filigree wire work on this case is really well executed, and has a feathery/floral appearance, with a teardrop shaped border. The purse/case has a style of those produced during the American civil war, but as there is only a Sterling stamp on the interior lip, and no maker's mark, we cannot precisely date it, except to say that it was made in the Victorian era, most likely 1860-1890. The case measures 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" by 1/4" thick. The handle drop to top of the case is 6 1/2" and distance from top of handle to bottom of case is 9 3/4". Weight is 45 grams. There are 4 shield shaped cartouches on the case-2 on each side. One side has an engraved J on the flip top and an E on the main body cartouche. The 2 remaining cartouche shields on the opposite side are blank.
Please see above condition description and photos for details. The hinges and pin are intact and have no splits or breaks-however the hinge does have "give" which allows the flip top to have some side to side movement. The case also has slightly concave panels, a result of being handled for 100+ years. The filigree wire work is in beautiful condition. A lovely addition for a collection.
