- Union: Pvt. Jacob Elsesser, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves — wrote six months of wartime entries but abandoned the book after the battle of Beaver Dam Creek in June 1862.
- Confederate: Pvt. George Washington Hall, 14th Georgia Infantry — found the book, claimed it for his own use, and wrote in it through 1865, including his nine months as a POW at Fort Delaware.
The Confederate soldier was my great-grandfather. The book was edited by my sister, who teaches Civil War history at a college in Maryland. The book includes:
- Hundreds of diary entries by both soldiers
- Narratives from a separate journal that Hall kept between 1862-1863
- A unit history that Elsesser wrote on his Company B of the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves
Plus each chapter has very extensive context material. One or both of the men fought in all the major battles in the Eastern Theatre between 182-1864: Gettysburg, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Spotsylvania.

The book will come with a sticker with the authors signature, and if desired, simply adhere to the inside of the book. I am a Civil War relic hunter (our love of history runs in the family), and included with each book is an authentic Civil War three-ring bullet that I recovered in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. She's the author - I'm the digger!
The book is 10X7 in size, softbound, with 514 pages, and just over 2 pounds.
