The female Ornithoptera priamus poseidon, known as the common green birdwing, is a large, striking butterfly native to northeastern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and surrounding islands. Females are generally larger and less vividly coloured than their male counterparts, with wingspans up to 20 cm. Their wings are brown or dark olive-green with white or cream patches, while their undersides are more muted.
This butterfly inhabits tropical rainforests, where it feeds on nectar from a variety of flowering plants. Its larvae primarily feed on Aristolochia vines, which contain toxic compounds that make both the caterpillars and adults distasteful to predators.
The species name, priamus, references King Priam of Troy, while Poseidon honours the Greek god of the sea. An interesting curiosity is that the males of this species are highly sought after for their brilliant emerald-green wings, often used in jewellery and decorative crafts.
