Art Nouveau Carved Horn Poppy Pendant Signed GIP c.1900

An elegant and evocative Art Nouveau carved horn pendant dating to the early 20th century, beautifully modelled as a stylised poppy within a circular horn frame.

The flower is finely carved from translucent natural horn, displaying warm honey and olive tones when held to the light. The bold central seed head contrasts strikingly against the softly sculpted petals, capturing the flowing, organic aesthetic so characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. The circular surround is also formed from horn and suspended from later cord with metal fittings.

To the reverse, the piece is incised with the initials “GIP” within an oval cartouche. This may relate to the French horn carver Georges Pierre, active in Paris during the Art Nouveau period, although this attribution cannot be definitively confirmed and is offered as a considered opinion rather than a guarantee.

Carved horn jewellery of this period was highly prized for its warmth, translucency and ability to be sculpted into fluid botanical forms. The poppy motif, with its associations of sleep and symbolism, was particularly favoured in French and Jugendstil design.

Good antique condition overall. Light surface wear commensurate with age. Natural variations and striations to the horn as expected. Please study photographs carefully.
