Beginning this February, Marvel Comics is giving fans a bold new way to experience some of its most iconic characters with COLOR BLOCK VARIANT COVERS by superstar artist David Nakayama. Each striking cover will be built almost entirely around a single color—matching both the character and the background for a clean, high-impact design that instantly pops on the shelf.
The rollout will unfold across three distinct waves throughout 2026. The first wave, centered on the color RED, arrives in February, followed by WHITE in April and BLUE in June. Each COLOR BLOCK cover will also be offered as a virgin variant, letting Nakayama’s composition shine without logos or trade dress.
One of Marvel’s most in-demand cover artists, Nakayama has left his visual mark across nearly every corner of the Marvel Universe. This new program puts a fresh spin on that legacy, reframing familiar heroes and villains through a bold, minimalist lens that highlights his energetic and precise style in a completely new way.
On what sparked the concept, Nakayama explained:
“In 2021, I was looking for an eye-catching cover idea that would really stand out on the convention circuit and came up with an almost all-red Scarlet Witch cover. To my complete surprise and delight, it really took off, and I’ve since drawn many other covers with the same technique. But it’s been a minute, and when Marvel asked about bringing these back, we decided to go BIG!”
He added:
“With this new collection of covers, I’m thrilled to play again with a bold, strategically-limited palette and a wide variety of characters I’ve never drawn this way before (or at all in some cases!), I hope you enjoy!”
