The Punisher has always made the rest of the Marvel Universe uncomfortable with his no-mercy approach to justice, but what happens when other heroes take notes? This February, artist Ario Anindito (Star Wars: The High Republic) explores that unsettling idea with HELL’S KITCHEN VARIANT COVERS, imagining Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, and more adopting Frank Castle’s ruthless philosophy.
Timed to the launch of the new Punisher ongoing series by Benjamin Percy and José Luis Soares, the covers spotlight a grimmer Marvel landscape as Frank Castle wages a fresh war on organized crime while digging into the mystery of his missing memories.
Each piece gave Anindito room to rethink iconic costumes through a Punisher lens—swapping out the skull for hero-specific symbols while retaining the intimidation factor of Castle’s classic look.
“I was really excited and honored when Marvel asked me to do the HELL’S KITCHEN cover program!” Anindito shared. “It’s such a cool chance to dive deeper into the characters and give them a darker vibe, designing a gritty look and adding a badass tactical goth-rocker twist. These characters are already iconic, so it’s definitely a challenge, but also really fun to do. I drew inspirations from re-reading the Punisher MAX series and re-watching the ’98 Blade movie. Let’s just say these HELL’S KITCHEN versions are the last ones you’d want to mess with!”
