This Silver Dirham coin was issued under Emir Abd al Rahman II (AH 206-238, 822-852 AD) of Emirate of Cordoba (till 929 AD) in Spain. The size is 27 x 24 mm, and
the weight is 2.66 gr. It was minted in Al Andalus ( الانداس , now Cordoba) City, the capital. Cleaned. Some weakly struck parts. Well struck and well preserved.
The Numista Catalogue lists only one silver coin (Numista-76492), which was issued under Abd al Rahman II. Numista-76492 is somewhat similar with this coin. The
Numista rarity index of Numista-76492, is "80". In my 40 years of collecting experience, I think the index of "80" is too low. This coin must be very rare and very hard
to get.
The Emirate of Cordoba was a medieval Islamic kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula. Its founding in the mid-eighth century would mark the beginning of seven hundred
years of Muslim rule in what is now Spain and Portugal. The territories of the Emirate had formed part of the Umayyad Caliphate since the early eighth century, After the
Caliphate was overthrown by the Abbasids in 750, the Umayyad prince Abd al Rahman I fled the former capital of Damascus and established an independent emirate
in Iberia in 756. Within decades, the emirate grew into one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the world. In 929, Emir Abd al Rahman III declared the
Caliphate of Cordoba, with himself as caliph.
Abd al-Rahman II ( عبد اارحمن الاوسط ) was the fourth Umayyad Emir of Cordoba in al Andalus from 822 until his death (852 AD). A vigorous and effective frontier warrior,
he was also known as a patron of the arts. He was born in Toledo, the son of Emir al Hakam I. He succeeded his father as Emir of Cordoba in 822 and for 20 years
engaged in nearly continuous warfare against Alfonso II of Asturias, whose southward advance he halted. He was famous for his public program in Cordoba. He made
additions to the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba.
