Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.

Here we offer the first US edition, 15th year printing, of Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic, The Brothers Karamzov, published by Macmillan, New York, in 1927. Dostoevsky was virtually unknown to the English-speaking world prior to this 1912 translation by Constance Garnett because translators viewed him as too difficult to translate. After Virginia Woolf responded to this translation by calling Dostoevsky "the greatest writer ever born", he gained a reputation beyond even Tolstoi.

Boards are soiled and edgeworn (please see pics). Endpages are uninscribed.  New acid-free saddle at rear gutter. Very tight and square binding; very clean, bright, and crisp text. 838 pages; book measures approximately 5.25 x 7.5-inches.

This scarce, iconic first will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very special gift.
