Hellfeld (Brightfield) and Dunkelfeld (Darkfield) are terms often used in German-speaking regions or by manufacturers like to describe objectives compatible with both illumination modes. These "HD" (Hellfeld/Dunkelfeld) objectives are specialized for reflected light microscopy (metallurgy) and feature a unique dual-path design.

Key Characteristics of HD Objectives

Dual-Channel Design: Unlike standard objectives, HD objectives have an internal central lens system for brightfield and an outer concentric ring (annulus) that guides light for darkfield.

•              Mounting Threads: Because they house an extra illumination channel, they are physically wider and use larger mounting threads, such as M26, M27, or M30, rather than the standard RMS (Royal Microscopy Society) thread.

•              No Coverslip Correction: Most are designed for metallurgical use (looking at solid surfaces) and are marked with "0" or "-" for coverslip thickness, meaning they are not intended for viewing samples through a glass slide.
