– The 1960 Baldwin Acrosonic ‘Scandinavian’ model piano is the best looking mid-century modern piano every produced. And while this piano appears to be an original Baldwin Acrosonic… it’s actually much much better.This is the Phantom: a complete reinvention of Baldwin’s classic 947 model spinet piano. Entirely hand-made in Los Angeles, California by Aker Studio, the Phantom is meticulously crafted combining original Baldwin components and the finest Walnut available.

– The original Baldwin Acrosonic pianos were factory produced using #1 common grade Walnut plywood. While the design of the piano was exquisite, the cabinet quality belied the sophisticated presentation of the piano’s form. The grain on all of original Baldwin Acrosonic pianos is ubiquitously uneventful and plain. Similarly, the finish applied to the original pianos was underwhelming, strangely colored, and seemingly amateur. Unfortunately, none of these short-comings can be resolved by refinishing a vintage original.

– Resultantly, we determined that the only way to make the ultimate mid-century modern piano, was not just to give the Baldwin Acrosonic the custom exterior it originally deserved, but to also design an entirely new complementary piano bench as well. The entirely of the Acrosonic’s cabinet is new, comprised from hand-selected high-quality FAS grade Walnut. Hand-shaped solid walnut is used where Baldwin would have installed plywood. Lumber is chosen based upon grain presentation and rich coloration. Unlike Baldwin’s cabinets, edge-banding is applied to the removable panels and lid for a more finished and elegant appearance. All panels have been outfitted with furniture grade cane. All brass hardware has been naturally aged.

– The piano isn’t just a beautiful specimen, it also received all new white plastic key tops. The action has been adjusted and it has been completely tuned. This piano sounds as good as it looks.
