This is an excellent example of a Chokwe face mask, so surrounding the wearer's head it is practically a helmet mask. It is complete, intact and in very good condition. It sports an enormous cowl comprised of shredded wool rags or, actually, wool weatherstripping. Hard to tell but luckily surviving. The facial features are subtle and beautifully carved. Its scarifications are delicately modeled and the slightly open mouth shows sharpened teeth. The forehead has the typical Chokwe cross. A row of tiny glass beads at the top enhances the stylized representation of a tall coiffure. At the front are two bent wooden members attached by lacing through rows of holes. I have seen this technique used as an attempt to halt splits but these seem entirely decorative. I don't know their purpose if there is one. I hope my photos show the quality of this mask. The wooden portion is about 12" tall, the cowl strips are 15" long. It is an extraordinary artifact. I do not sell or ship internationally.
