Original Second World War British Army air letter dated 1944, addressed to Private J. McMullan, service number 5108129, 1st Battalion, “C” Company, The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire).
The letter bears King George VI 6d air letter postage, British Army postal datestamps, censor markings, and an official cachet stating that the addressee was reported deceased (Army Form W.3077A). The letter was returned undelivered following official notification of death on active service.
He was killed on September 24, 1944 at age 33.
In 1944–45 the 1st Battalion, The Loyal Regiment was serving as frontline infantry in Italy, taking part in major operations along the Gothic Line and later the advance into northern Italy. The battalion was involved in heavy fighting in the Faenza and Argenta areas, including actions associated with the Battle of Biazza, a significant engagement during the final Allied offensive in Italy.
