You are buying a neutralizing capacitor:

 

Nice vintage National neutralizing cap.  The base plate was removed by the previous owner so the insulators could be directly mounted to the chassis - no difference in performance.  About 3-5/8" high, with a footprint of about 1-1/2 x 2-3/4".  Full proceeds from this sale will go to charity to support children at our school in Africa - thanks!
