Antique refined earthenware paperweight manufactured by James Macintyre & Co., Burslem, and printed with a detailed map of the Western Hemisphere carrying the publication credit “J.G. Bartholomew F.R.G.S.”. Conceived as a cartographic curiosity, the domed top depicts North and South America with surrounding oceans and Antarctica, with territorial areas carefully picked out in hand-applied colour, giving the piece a lively and visually engaging presence.

The title “Western Hemisphere” appears on the incurved side above the map, with Bartholomew’s printed credit below. The paperweight was intended as a refined desk object, uniting practical function with the late Victorian fascination for geography, science, and educational display.

The cream-toned porcelain body is modelled with incurved sides and an incised geometric border pattern, heightened with neatly painted red line decoration. The transfer remains sharply defined, and the overall finish is crisp and deliberate, characteristic of high-quality late Victorian porcelain production.

The underside is blind-stamped “Macintyre” and bears the British registration mark Rd. No. 141265, corresponding to the year 1889. These marks securely establish James Macintyre & Co. as the manufacturer, with the cartographic design and publication credit belonging to John G. Bartholomew of Edinburgh.

James Macintyre & Co. (1849–1897) was one of the most accomplished and forward-looking porcelain manufacturers of late Victorian Britain, renowned for the precision of its modelling, the clarity of its transfer printing, and its collaborations with leading designers. Objects bearing the Macintyre mark are increasingly sought after by collectors. This paperweight unites Macintyre’s refined porcelain production with an authoritative Bartholomew cartographic design, making it not only a decorative desk object but a genuine collector’s piece with strong historical and cross-disciplinary appeal.
