Grant, by profession a railway engineer and entrepreneur, left England in 1899 to survey the Upper Yangtse region for the purpose of rail development. Descending the Yellow River by raft to reach Peking, he drowned when the raft capsized.
His companion, Captain Watts-Jones, survived, but was killed two weeks later by the deputy prefect at Kwai-hwa-cheng.
The text is based on Birch's diaries, "somewhat compressed and modified in form.”
