Here’s a rare, vintage PSYCHEDELIC ART SHOW POSTER for an artist gathering/event at ELECTRIC TIBET in Berkeley, California. It was designed by TOM WELLER with photo by PAUL KAGAN. Billed as the “FIRST WEST COAST SHOW” and promoted by “JOYFUL WISDOM ENTERPRISES”. It opened in Berkeley on May 1st, 1967. It featured a cultural mix of visual, audible, tactile and sensory arts and artists as well as vendors of HIPPY culture “wares”. Apparently the emphasis was on PSYCHEDELIA and COUNTER CULTURE.
This is an Original, Vintage SAN FRANCISCO POSTER CO Pressing
The poster offered here was printed by Frank Westlake of THE SAN FRANCISCO POSTER CO.
Original posters for this event, also printed by Westlake at The Bindweed Press, are very hard find. At least I’ve never seen one. This VINTAGE poster IS a reprint, and an unauthorized reprint at that. But it’s a very notable and collectible one with an interesting story behind it. Lots of confusion, mis-information and debate surround this and other SFPCo. posters. Some consider this a “Legitimate Pressing”, “Second Pressing” or an “Original Reprint” and Others say it’s a “Reproduction”, “Bootleg”, “Pirate” or at least an “unauthorized reprint”. And they both seem to be a little “right” in ways. But I’ll just call it what it essentially is, “A REPRINT”, and leave the nuances and debates to the collectors and experts! (See Info Below)
These hard to find vintage reprints are about the only way to have a copy of this rare poster. I believe the original posters for the show were printed in 1967 by Frank Westlake at the notable “Bindweed Press” in San Francisco. This example was printed later, also by Westlake, for the SFPCo., sometime, I think, in the 1970s-early 80s.
The condition is EXCELLENT to NEAR MINT- with no damage or flaws to relate. It is clean, bright and unfaded. It has been stored since new (1970s-80) and has never been taped, pinned or even displayed. It measures about 13 5/16”W x 19 7/16”H.
FOR THOSE INTERESTED:
THE SAN FRANCISCO POSTER CO.
The story of the San Francisco Poster Co. goes something like this. Steeped in the tradition of the Psychedelic San Francisco ART & MUSIC scene with all the famous and iconic figures of the era, posters and art were being feverishly produced by some of the most famous artists, promoters, rock bands, and printers of the times. Among these was FRANK WESTLAKE and the BINDWEED PRESS.
Indeed, Westlake was responsible for printing some of the most famous rock art posters and images of that golden era for some of the most now-famous groups and venues and now-iconic psychedelic artists of the time. One of his biggest clients was CHET HELMS of THE FAMILY DOG.
The Bindweed cranked out dozens of poster for Family Dog and the AVALON BALLROOM. The Zig Zag Man for a Joplin show, The SKELETON & ROSES for a Grateful Dead show to name just a couple. Well, near the end of the decade, Helms had a substantial unpaid account with Westlake. And whether that was a factor or not, I don’t know, but sometime around 1969-1971, after an illustrious run of the most notable works, Westlake closes the Bindweed, packs up his shit and splits for England. Taking with him many of those original screens, plates, etc. (which he rightfully and legally owned).
He sets up shop in London(?) and begins printing posters from those original screens, even though we was not authorized to print them. Obviously to make a living but perhaps also to recoup the money Helms owed him. He called his new venture THE SAN FRANCISCO POSTER CO. He removed the “Bindweed Press” credit from the plates and replaced it with his new name (not sure if he did this right away, but the Bindweed, at least, was removed).
These are all vintage posters, about 50 years old, though I do not know the exact years they were printed (maybe from 1972-75 and perhaps into the ’80s?). There has been much debate over the years of the morality of his actions and whether the prints should be considered bootlegs, pirates, unauthorized reprints or just plain reprints. They are, after all, made from the original screens with original art, by the original printer.
Regardless of debates, San Francisco Poster Co. posters are vintage artifacts from a golden era of psychedelic creativity. They have taken on a life of their own and have earned a solid following of dedicated and serious collectors that appreciate them at face value and their notable place in Rock Art history. Prices and interest have been steadily growing while supply has been shrinking. It’s a great time to catch this market while getting is good.
BTW- I am not currently aware if the San Francisco Poster Co. printed any legitimate or new posters, aside from these reprints, in England. I would think he did serve some new clients in his new location. Perhaps even for memorable happenings in the UK or Europe. But I’m not aware of it and would love to know. If anyone out there has such information (or any corrections, dates or new info on the subjects above) please let me know. Thanks!
