VINTAGE CARLTON WARE BLUE & GILT ORIENTAL SCENE (2032) SHALLOW BOWL - 9”.



On offer is a beautiful vintage Carlton Ware decorative shallow bowl made in England dating from the 1930’s - 1940’s.


This 9” bowl known as the ‘Temple’ pattern (2032) with the ‘Mikado’ border design features a rich cobalt blue background with an elaborate Orientalist/Chinoiserie scene. It depicts temples, figures (the figure on the left representing the Mikado and on the right Yum-Yum or Katisha), trees and water, all highlighted with extensive hand-applied gilt decoration. The scalloped rim is richly embellished with a gold floral border, giving the piece a striking, elegant appearance.


Carlton Ware was known for its high-quality hand-painting and innovative glazes which often gave their pieces a textured, tactile finish. This is a classic example of Carlton Ware’s decorative ware and was intended as a cabinet or display item, rather than for everyday use.


There are no chips, cracks and the glazing to the piece which is 9” (23cm) wide and 1¼” (3.3cm) deep.
