DETAIL: Born in 1928 in Glasgow, Gibson originally trained as an opera singer and then became House Manger at the London Opera Centre based in the Troxy Cinema in Commercial Rd where he lived in a flat at the top of the building. A self-taught artist, he painted in the evenings after work.
“I began as an abstract painter but when I came to Stepney, I found paintings on my doorstep. Though I think there’s still a quiet abstract quality to my paintings. I am trying to express the spirit of the buildings, the strength of them and the people who were there. This is why I don’t put people into my paintings. People turn them into an episode with a background – but I am painting the background! I love these buildings. I walk the dog and I look at them at different times of day and in different weathers, and I keep going back. In a way I am making a record of a changing, I wouldn’t say a dying area, but often I go back to check up on a detail, a colour and a whole street has gone.” Gibson said in an interview in the Times in 1972.
Immensely successful in his day, enjoying acclaim and sell-out shows – one of which at St Botolph’s in Bishopsgate was opened by Tubby Isaac the jellied eel king – Noel Gibson was featured on BBC’s “Nationwide,” a popular current affairs programme in 1972. In 1974, he moved to South London, working at Morley College and appointed Provost’s Verger at Southwark Cathedral, yet in 1985 he admitted, “I regard Tower Hamlets as the area of inspiration for my work and I will always return to it.”
Noel Gibson died in 2006 and a collection of paintings, originally bought by Tower Hamlets Council in 1970 to be shown in public buildings, came to light when the borough’s art collection was being photographed – inspiring Anna Haward to curate a beautiful show that recovers a major painter of the recent, yet already distant, East End. His first retrospective demonstrated the first artistic expressions upon which all his later work is so deeply founded. Pictures by the artist are now in private collections throughout the world including New Zealand, Holland, Israel and Australia. An example hangs in the town hall of Suresnes, a suburb of Paris. The Hackney Council exhibited sixty paintings and a Westminster show of forty two pictures on the Canaletto, the floating art gallery in Little Venice, sold almost every painting. Twenty of his scenes are owned by the Tower Hamlets Council and two are owned by Hackney Council.

You are welcome to ask questions about the frame condition before buying but we cannot accept returns or requests for 'part refunds' because a frame arrives with some existing damage not sustained in transit.

Replacement glass costs just a few pounds, is easily fitted, and saves the strong likelihood of your artwork getting damaged in the post if glass were included. We ship within a maximum of 3 days of purchase and will use a variety of 24-48 hour parcel carriers including Parcelforce, UPS, Yodel, City Link and Hermes. Internationally we generally ship UPS on a 5 day service. We ship worldwide apart from The Russian Federation and certain other countries where we cannot get parcel company coverage. You are also welcome to collect from our address near Cirencester, Cotswolds – at no charge. Unfortunately we have to charge a small premium for UK Highlands & Islands as well as Northern Ireland, please email for a postal quote if you live in these areas of the country.
We accept returns when notified within 48 hours of receipt. If the return is due to an error on our part then we will pay up to £12 for the return postage. If the return is for other reasons, not the fault of ourselves, then we will not pay for the return postage but will refund the full purchase price (excluding postage) on receipt.
