First Edition
[Mexican Literature] [Mexican Revolution] Azuela, Mariano. The Under Dogs. (Spanish: Los de abajo) New York: Brentano's. 1929. First edition. 224 pages. 8vo. Black and white illustrations. Original black cloth boards with gilt text, spine sunned to a light brown. Lacking dustjacket. Based on Azuela's own experiences having served in the Mexican Revolution as a medical officer for Pancho Villa's Northern Division. The Under Dogs is the fictional account of a group of Mexican commoners who involuntarily join the revolution and the toll it takes on their psyche. The novel was the first of its kind to be translated into English, as part of a project sponsored by the Mexican Government and the Mexican Renaissance intellectual movement to promote Mexico as a literature-creating country. The novel's popularity grew when in 1932, critic Earl K. James said of Azeula: "Azuela is a doctor by profession and a revolutionary by conviction. Nor do his literary activities keep him from the pursuit of his profession or from working for social justice within a modest sphere. American readers may remember his 'The Underdogs.' The best novel of the Diaz Revolution of 1910 to appear here." Binding is tight, text and pages are crisp and clean. Some light wear to front cover. Marked in ink on front end pages by former owner at Bucknell University in 1929. Overall very good condition. Azuela came to be known as the first of the "novelists of the Revolution," and he influenced other Mexican novelists of social protest. A well preserved copy of Azuela's most famous work.Seller ID: 20867
