Original USGS topographical map of part of Franklin County in the North Country region of New York State,
printed more than 115
years ago.
- It is identified as the
August 1908
edition of the
Apalachin quadrangle, compiled from surveys in 1902-1906.
- The image area of the map measures 44.5 x 32 cm [17½" x
12½"],
and the coverage area is bounded by longitude 74°00' W to 74°15' W
and latitude
44°30' N to 44°45 .
- The map is drawn on a scale of 1:62,500, with contour
lines at 20-foot
intervals.
- It locates the track alignments of logging railroads used by the Brooklyn Cooperage Company (BCC). At Tekene Junction these rail lines connected with the Adirondack Division of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad to haul logs to BCC's mill in Saint Regis Falls, which made staves for sugar barrels. BCC was a subsidiary of the American Sugar Refining Company, which had become Domino Sugar in 1900.
- Among the other places and features on the map are Indian Lake, Salmon River, Titusville, Goldsmith Mountains, Molasses Craters, Port Kent & Hopkinton Turnpike, North Branch of the Saranac River, Wolf Pond, Middle Kilns, Porkbarrel Pond, California Road, Slab Bridge, Hunter Home, Barnesville, Owls Head, Merrillville, Catamount, the Chateaugay Branch of the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, and a trail from Lake Kushaqua to Debar Pond, through the valley between the Sable and Loon Lake Mountains.
