APTIS was the Accountancy and Passenger Ticket Issuing System. Production machines were used on the British Rail/National Rail network from October 1986 until June 2007, a wide variety of printed cards was used. Decoding the bottom line of a typical ticket:

40029 - serial number of ticket
3611 - serial number of APTIS machine
1536M03 - 1536 = National Location Code for Luton station (still current)
1536M03 - M03 = London Midland Region + ticket office window 3
Letters E, H, S and W were used similarly for the Eastern, Scottish, Southern and Western Regions. Occasional regional changes affected tickets also and are usually explained in headings. Letter B was used for BR headquarters operations such as the former London Travel Bureaux then briefly for some new National Rail stations such as Brunswick.
