ABOUT COPELAND SPODE:

Josiah Spode established the pottery, crucial in developing underglaze transfer printing (1780s) and the formula for bone china (around 1790), making high-quality ceramics accessible. William Copeland partnered with Josiah Spode II, eventually taking over operations, leading to the "Copeland Spode" name used for much of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Copeland Spode mark, when the Copeland family ran the Spode factory from 1833-to 1970, varies from "Copeland & Garrett" (1833-47) or "W.T. Copeland & Sons" (post-1847) alongside "Spode" or "Late Spode". Each was used to leverage the famous brand, creating continuity, with specific marks (like impressed letters/numbers) helping date items from this era of fine bone china and earthenware production.
