About the plant
Baikal skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), grows naturally in China, Mongolia, Siberia, and Japan. It is a hardy perennial with striking violet flowers and has been highly valued in traditional herbal practices of East Asia for centuries.
The root is the main herbal material, rich in flavonoids such as baicalin and wogonin, making it one of the most respected Asian herbal plants.
Uses
- Decoction: simmer 2–3 g of root in 200 ml of water for 5 minutes, steep for 30 minutes, strain.
- Tincture: 1 part root to 5 parts 40–45% alcohol, macerate for 2 weeks.
- Oil macerate: combine root with warm grapeseed oil, steep in a dark place for 14 days.
