INDIANAPOLIS -- Organizers envision the July 9 exhibition games involving the men's and women's U.S. Olympic basketball teams at the Hoosier Dome as the greatest night of basketball in the history of the American game.

The largest crowd ever to witness a basketball game -- approximately 67,000 -- will fill the new domed stadium in downtown Indianapolis to pay tribute once again to one of Indiana's most popular coaches, Bobby Knight, and the two Olympic squads.

The schedule calls for a game between the women's team, coached by Pat Head Summitt of the University of Tennessee, and a collection of former collegiate women players followed by the men's Olympic team against a group of NBA All-Stars, led by another popular figure in Indiana, Larry Bird of the Boston Celtics.

Kevin McHale, Quinn Buckner and Robert Parish have agreed to play as well.

It will be the fourth exhibition contest for the men's team following a couple of other games against NBA All-Stars and the opening battle against a team of former Indiana University players.

But Indiana residents take special pride in basketball, emphasizing the game in sports programs from grade school through all academic and amateur levels. Since the men's team is coached by IU's Knight, a man who has brought two national collegiate titles to the state in 13 years, the anticipation of this event is unprecedented.

'This could only happen in Indianapolis, and I've been all over the world,' said Indianapolis native, college and NBA star Oscar Robertson.

Knight, a man who proudly displays his pride in America, speaks glowingly of the 12-man Olympic team.

'These players are working like hell to represent all of us,' said Knight. 'I don't think there can be a better representative of what America is. From a coaching standpoint, we (the coaches) are the people who should be thankful. This is a great, great group of kids.'

The men's roster includes Steve Alford of Indiana, Patrick Ewing of Georgetown, Vern Fleming of Georgia, Michael Jordan of North Carolina, Joe Kleine of Arkansas, Jon Koncak of Southern Methodist, Chris Mullin of St. John's, Sam Perkins of North Carolina, Alvin Robertson of Arkansas, Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma, Jeff Turner of Vanderbilt and Leon Wood of Cal State-Fullerton.

The final women's Olympic roster has Teresa Edwards of Georgia, Lea Henry of Tennessee, Lynette Woodard of Kansas, Anne Donovan of Old Dominion, Cathy Boswell of Illinois State, Cheryl Miller of Southern Cal, Janice Lawrence of Louisiana Tech, Cindy Noble of Tennessee, Kim Mulkey of Louisiana Tech, Denise Curry of UCLA, Pam McGee of Southern Cal and Carol Menken-Schaudt of Oregon State.

The games will be the first major sporting event in the Dome, completed in May. Previous events have included a rodeo, an Indianapolis Colts mini-camp, and several dinners, including a tribute to the Olympic team and to Knight which drew 3,000 people at $100 a plate.

The Colts will play all their home games in the Dome, and several other football games are scheduled for the stadium this fall, including several high school and college games.
