THE REVOLT OF THE ANGELS - ANATOLE FRANCE - ILLUSTRATIONS FRANK C PAPE - 1924 FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION.

This is an opportunity to purchase a beautifully illustrated copy of Anatole France's "The Revolt of the Angels", illustrated by Frank C Pape. Perfect for collectors of rare literature and avid readers. Contains uncut pages, so has not been fully read since its printing 100 years ago.

 

Hardcover - Large 8vo - (10" x 6").

First illustrated edition published by John Lane the Bodley Head Ltd in 1924. First published in 1914. Part of a 36 volume collection of the Works of Anatole France, translated into English from French by Mrs. Wilfrid Jackson.

Gilt text and decoration on black boards and spine. Pages (357) are untrimmed with top edges dyed red. Slight foxing on the edges but the boards and the pages are in excellent condition. Tightly bound. Pencil inscription on FFP but otherwise the interior is clean.

 

Anatole France, 1844-1924, was a French poet, journalist and novelist. He won a Nobel Prize in literature in 1921. In 1922, his entire bibliography was listed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (List of Banned Books) of the Catholic Church. He regarded this as a triumph.

 

Frank C. Pape, 1878-1972, was an English artist and illustrator. He illustrated a vast variety of works for major publishers throughout his 64-year career, and is best known for his spectacular artwork in Anatole France's illustrated editions of the 1920s.

 

This is not an ex-library book but from a private collection.
