Published for the Trade in 1880, this A Handy Dictionary of the English Language is a compact 19th-century reference work compiled by John Marshall Wood. It includes pronunciation guides, concise definitions, useful tables, the metric system, and numerous small engraved illustrations throughout the text.
This copy shows significant exterior wear consistent with its age: the green cloth boards are rubbed and stained, corners frayed, and the spine ends worn. The binding is somewhat fragile but remains intact. The pages show age toning and handling marks, and several early owner signatures appear on the endpapers (John Mason, Farmington ME and Lawrence MA). Interior pages appear complete, including the section on the metric system and the many in-text engravings.
A well-used but appealing example of a compact late-Victorian dictionary—ideal for collectors of early reference books, miniature or pocket dictionaries, or 19th-century printed ephemera.
