A pair of antique gilt composition frames dating to around 1900, each with a deep section and detailed foliate moulding typical of late-Victorian and early-Edwardian work. The frames have a stepped inner border, high-relief gesso ornament and an aged gilt finish that presents well. Both are substantial pieces designed originally for oil paintings or formal portraits.
The measurements are approximately 65 × 76 cm overall, with an internal rebate of about 46 × 56 cm visible (max 47.5 x 58cm). They remain structurally sound, with age-related cracking to the composition, small corner losses and rubbing to the gilding. These are normal features of original frames of this period. However well wrapped posting may cause some slight damage to the gesso which can either be glued back in place or where white is showing painted brown. The frame has historic repairs and I have toned down some obvious white patches.
The frames weigh 3.7kg each without backing boards around 8kg in total. Original picture screw eyes included. Backing boards and a white bit of backing paper.
One frame still carries a label from E. M. Thomas of the Principality’s Art Warehouse, Merthyr. The business operated in the years before the First World War, supplying frames and art materials to one of Britain’s major iron and coal towns. Its presence on the reverse supports an early 20th-century date and adds useful local provenance.
A rare matched pairs of frames. Will be carefully packed but pick up would be preferred. We are based in Leigh on Sea but often in Northumberland.
They do present very well. Similar items listed. Any questions please ask.
