This is the original, third, enlarged edition of this scarce book which presents the history of the 5th New York Cavalry during the American Civil War. The book is rich with the experience and history of the unit, provides observations of the author throughout the war, provides sketches of the Armies of the Potomac and of the Shenandoah, accounts of prison life and of the Secret Service, and presents complete lists of the unit’s officers and men. This Regiment lost greatest number killed in action of any Cavalry Regiment in the entire army. The Author, Captain Louis N. Boudrye, was the Chaplain of the Regiment.
The 5th New York Cavalry, also known as the "First Ira Harris Guard," was a Union cavalry regiment in the American Civil War. Organized in New York in 1861, the regiment fought in numerous battles in the eastern United States, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. It was present at nearly 175 battles and skirmishes with the majority of fighting being in Virginia. It sustained heavy losses but gained a reputation for gallantry and fine fighting and was one of the finest cavalry units in the Union Army. The regiment was organized in 1861 and fought for the Union until 1865. It was involved in campaigns and battles such as the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. It’s battles include the battles of Front Royal, First Winchester, First Rappahannock Station, Second Bull Run, Hanover, Gettysburg, Williamport, Mine Run, dThe Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, Wilson-Kautz Raid, Sappony Church, First Ream’s Station, Third Winchester, Tom Brook, Cedar Creek, Waynesboro (VA), Five Forks, Appomattox Station, and Appomattox Court House.

The antique book is in nice overall condition. The book comes protected in a clear, Mylar dust jacket (see photo #3). Bound in brown, cloth covers with gold lettering on the spine and a “Sheridan Shenandoah” image on the cover, the book is handsomely presented. The exterior is clean with light rubbing and edge wear and some cloth loss to the spine tips. The spine lettering is sharp and bright. The image on the cover has faded slightly. The interior is clean and in excellent condition. There is an antique signature dated 1878 on one of the front, blank pages. I have not evaluated this signature to determine if it is to a Civil War soldier. The pages are clean and nice throughout with no writing, smudging, foxing, stamps, pasteboards or other markings. The binding is solid throughout the book; the front hinge is paper cracked, but both hinges are solid. The book is missing the rear end page, but is complete otherwise. It contains 6 Steele portraits, 6 wood cut illustrations, and 11 tables on a variety of unit matters including Officer at Time of Muster Out, Commandants of the Regiments, Non-Commissioned Staff, Strength of the Command at Various Dates, Full Statistics, Engagements and their Casualties, Men Killed in Action, Men Mortally Wounded in Action, Men Discharged by Reasons of Wounds, and Retired Officers and Men Who Died in Rebel Prisons. Most of these present excellent detail and information. 385 pages, plus 3 pages of testimonials about the book. An excellent, Civil War, history of the 5th New York Cavalry Regiment - a hard-fought and respected fighting unit.
