This original Droste's Cacao (cocoa) powder tin is in great condition, and even includes the original contents. Droste's originated in Haarlem, The Netherlands, in 1863 and is still in production. This cocoa powder was used to make hot cocoa, chocolate milk, and in baking. The paper bag is printed with what appears to be the company's story, as well as some recipes. Of course, I don't speak Dutch and Google translate did not work on the company's website, so this is just an educated guess about the writing.
The tin measures 3.5" square and is 6" tall. Including the contents it weighs about 11 ounces (300 grams). Interestingly, the tin displays the nurse carrying a serving tray with a cup of hot chocolate and a tin of Droste cocoa depicting same image. This gives the effect of a picture recursively appearing within itself. The picture in a picture effect, in theory, continues deeper into the picture ad infinitum. This was later coined the "Droste Effect", becoming a household notion inextricably linked with the Durch chocolate brand.
I have included the original cocoa contents for authenticity. PLEASE do not consume the product. It is decades old and the bag was open.
I have not been able to verify the age of the tin. I am just basing the 1930 date on those offered by other sellers. It very well may be older than that.
