The Benin Bronzes are artworks produced by a powerful West African kingdom (now known as Nigeria) Made from, primarily, the 15th-19th centuries. .

They include sculptures and decorative items made from cast brass, copper alloy, ivory, and wood.
Forms:
Common forms include commemorative heads of past Obas (kings), animal and human figures, personal ornaments, and plaques depicting historical events and court life.
Purpose:
The artworks were commissioned by the royal court for ancestral altars, to celebrate royal achievements, and to validate a new king's accession.
