This exquisite Russian lacquer brooch is hand painted with a dynamic troika scene — the traditional carriage drawn by three galloping horses, a beloved motif in Russian folklore and art. Vivid reds, yellows, and whites leap against the midnight background, framed by a delicate border. The glossy lacquer surface enhances the jewel-like tones of the painting. The brooch is signed “ТРОИЦК” (Troitsk), one of the lacquer miniature centers of Russia, known for producing finely painted boxes and jewelry from the mid-20th century.

Russian lacquer brooches were created from papier-mâché built up in many layers, then carefully painted in tempera and sealed with lacquer. This painstaking process reflects centuries of tradition from the lacquer art villages of Palekh, Fedoskino, Kholuy, Mstera, and Troitsk. The subject matter of fairy tales, folk life, and historical scenes made these brooches highly collectible from the 1940s onward, especially during the mid-century export boom.

How to Style It

Wear this brooch on a wool coat, scarf, or beret for a touch of Russian folk charm. It also pairs beautifully with a simple black dress, letting the bold painting become the focal point. Collectors may also enjoy displaying it alongside lacquer boxes and other Russian miniatures as part of a folk art collection.
