- SympaTex membrane is a thin hydrophilic membrane made of a copolymer of polyester and simple polyester.
- A hydrophilic membrane usually consists of two components.
The hydrophobic component is used as a frame and at the same time prevents excessive swelling of the second component - the hydrophilic part. It is the second, hydrophilic component, which is responsible for transferring steam from one side of the membrane to the other. Since the hydrophobic material is used exclusively to create the frame of the membrane and give it the necessary mechanical properties, its characteristics have little effect on the mechanism of water vapor transfer from one side of the membrane to the other. At the same relative humidity and temperature on both sides of the hydrophilic component, moisture transfer does not occur. More precisely, the transfer in both directions occurs at the same speed. Therefore, the amount of steam on both sides remains the same. If the temperature is raised on one side of the membrane, the membrane will inevitably be heated. As a result, a temperature difference is formed on different sides of the membrane, the membrane itself will have an intermediate temperature. As a result, water will flow from the hot part to the cold part. Thus, water vapor will be absorbed from the hot side into the hydrophilic membrane. And moisture will be displaced from the hydrophilic membrane to the cold side of the membrane. Under certain conditions, a situation is quite acceptable when the transfer through the membrane takes place in the form of condensation - steam is absorbed on one side of the membrane, and liquid water is separated on the other side. Due to the thickness of the order of 0.01 mm and the characteristics of the material, the SympaTex membrane has low weight and excellent dynamic qualities. The Sympatex membrane does not lose its properties even when stretched 3 times in any direction. Therefore, Sympatex is often used in those areas of clothing where the membrane is subjected to increased stress during bending and friction of the material: elbows, knees and shoulders. The manufacturer claims high vapor permeability of the Sympatex membrane: more than 2500g/m2 per day. And high waterproofness - about 10,000 mm of water column. However, it does not specify the testing conditions. An important difference between the membrane and the Gore-Tex membrane is the absence of micropores, due to which the properties of the Sympatex membrane are much less dependent on contamination and salinization of the membrane surface. Like most membranes, the Sympatex membrane, due to its small thickness and, as a result, low strength, cannot be used by itself. Usually, one or another membrane material based on the Sympatex membrane is used. Bluesign is a strict standard associated with the production of textile products. It requires that the production and the products themselves do not disrupt the balance in the environment, do not harm human health and treat natural resources with the utmost care.
