Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is an exceptionally rare publication: “YAMAMOTO BALUS KOKOPO VILLAGE” by Yoji Sakaida.
This booklet addresses the wreck of the MITSUBISHI G4M BETTY in which Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto was shot down in 1943. Though heavily picked over, a significant portion of the wreck still exists in Bougainville, and the author is probably the world’s expert on the wreck. He has made multiple trips to the wreck site and over the years, has established a level of trust with the wreck’s caretakers, the people of nearby Kokopo Village. We obtained this book from the author during a meeting at the Kawaguchiko Air Museum in Japan where a BETTY fuselage is on display. As can be seen from the accompanying scans, the publication is chock full of photographs of the wreck and the people of Kokopo Village. Text is in Japanese. We will also include a ‘bag tag’ featuring the BETTY on display at the Kawaguchiko Air Museum.
