Published by Peter Owen Ltd in 1943, this hardcover edition features a new English translation by Guy Wernham and comes housed in its original slipcase.

Black cloth covered boards with gilt title to spine. The book is in an excellent, unstained and unblemished condition, tightly bound with sharp corners and minimal shelf wear. The Slipcase is in good condition with some rubbing and edge wear especially to one corner (see photo 22).
The interior of the book (303 pages with untrimmed edges and top edge in blue) is in excellent condition, bright, clean and crisp with no inscriptions, foxing or highlighting apart from the previous owner's name plate to the fep. In fact it looks virtually unread.
Les Chants de Maldoror is Lautréamont’s major work and written mid‑19th century (1868‑1869) and rediscovered by the Surrealists early in the 20th century. Les Chants de Maldoror is based on a character called Maldoror, a figure of unrelenting evil who has forsaken God.
It is considered a landmark in French Surrealist and avant‑garde literature. Full of shocking, dark, surreal imagery, visionary prose and enduring cultural impact, it is often praised (and sometimes criticised) for its extremity, its poetic beauty and its wildness.
This collectible edition is an excellent find for lovers of Surrealism, French literature, or rare mid-20th century classics.
