 MINERAL DESCRIPTION
Ocean Jasper is variety of Jasper that contains circular or orb-like inclusions of quartz or feldspar. It is only found on the shores of Madagascar at low tide. Another name for this mineral is Orbicular Jasper or Atlantis Stone.
In highly silicified rhyolite or tuff, quartz and feldspar crystallize in radial aggregates of needle-like crystals which provide the basis or seed for the orbicular structure seen in this kind of jasper. The material is quite attractive when polished and is used as an ornamental stone or gemstone.
The name Jasper is derived from the Old French word "jaspre" meaning "spotted or speckled stone". Jasper is known to have been a favorite gem in the ancient world dating back to 1800 BC when Minoan Crete peoples used it to create carved seals.
