Rare
vintage, Faturan technique, very likely based on tests, modified
amber, Transparent cherry amber/red
wine Bakelite, 17 polished
barrel beads with veins, Damari, Necklace (or you change it to
Tesbih-prayer beads) + 1 tested bead + divider + imam
Regarding this lot some key points must be considered.
a. What is Faturan?
b. Are these beads in this lot Faturan beads? Are they catalin?
a.
Faturan is a mix of Bakelite, Kachraman (pure old-cut amber) powder
and other materials and has exceptional features such as clear sound.
Named after the Egyptian chemist Faturan who invented this technique
>100 years ago. Transparent Faturan are all those later beads for
rosaries/necklaces/bracelets that were created after the crimson and
other lighter colors “faturan”. The recipe is similar yet with
different proportions in the ingredients, the final product has a
transparent result.
Faturan was developed by Traun & Son of Hamburg and was produced until the 1940s
b. To answer if these beads are Faturan.
Tests:
Please study the well explained pictures.
****One of the
firts things we can do is to check the color. Is it dark crimson?
Don't forget, The original and GENUINE Faturan beads were mainly, red, orange or yellow in all shades.
This is known in articles about Faturan beads in the internet, so just because this item is not very dark crimson color, does not necessairily mean it is not Faturan.
Please bear in mind some faturan are lighter cheery color than the dark ones as different makers used variations in the ingredients and their production process.
Also the color in the drilling holes may not be very dark since faturan beads come in all shades even light colored ones.
**** Origin is important as well, Egypt and Turkey are well known sources of Faturan beads. Are these Egyptian/Turkish?
The origin is certainly Turkish, it comes from Turkey. This item is from the personal collection of my family, antique collectors yet this comes from very old family members that I know were related to the old Greek community in Konstantinople (today's Istanbul in modern Turkey)
******
How old are these beads?
1940's or older.
Note: The item was originally an old tesbih but the cord was cut to make the test on the one bead. The parent bottle shape bead (also with veins) is included. The older cords in the 1980's were thrown as they had deteriorated. New ones were placed but again they are so old.
*****
Do the beads contain veins (important as many Faturan beads
have veins)?
all the beads have
veins
****
When beads click on each other
produce a clear click sound test?
Yes very characteristic for the beads of this lot ! Although
bakelite the click is like coming amost from glass marbles !
**** Most important, the color is not enough, we need to check if these beads include amber powder.
Only through laboratory test this is possible, however more tests can be made to see if the results fo the tests pointing that the beads contain amber powder
Pay however attention to the following strongly suggesting this is faturan:
soda test
the acetone test
The UV test a fainted glow pointing that likely amber powder is included.
The smell of the burned bead. I had to destroy one bead and burn it to smell it. It smells sweet like pine (along with the bizarre plastic/bakelite smell). It could be amber or it could be incense or both. Catalin and Faturan are both brand names for thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resins. No way to tell if this is a catalin as you can just smell a resin that actually is used in both . Catalin is a heat resistant substance however the beads in this lot do burn even very slowly but do burn, they are not that heat resistant,so they seem to be Faturan not Catalin
****
Are the beads hand made? The beads are not perfectly rounded,
not each same size(old/cut), this points that they are hand made,
see the tiny imperfections,
***** Other Similarities with other Faturan beads sold in online platforms
See on the ebay the experienced sellers sell identical beads and notice the tiny dents on the beads same like the ones you see on faturan beads with identical dents on ebay selling for such high prices.
In few words why to buy this:
Faturan with veins sells high on the web. This lot has very competitive price, see the other listings on ebay the prices are much higher, this is an opportunity
Vintage, almost antique
good condition/quality
future value - highly collectable item
resale value, experts in this field can buy it at such good price and resell at higher value
you
can turn it to a necklace or tesbih
Conclusion:
Too
many factors as well explained here point that
this is Faturan but please judge and
decide solely
based on the photos and
on the description stated in this lot and the tests shown on the
photos, no other
scientific
tests or
laboratory tests made to
confirm the faturan origin.
No Simichrome test, simichrome paste in Greece can't be found has to be ordered from abroad, min. cost 30 Euros, but experts in such beads will immediately understand that this is pointing to faturan. Send me your own simichrome paste if you want and I will test it for you.

I would be very glad to get your counter offers but please note the price offered is already competitive plus I have to pay insurance of transport (Secursus), to go to the post office spend time, spend time to pack (very securely !), buy and use packing materials (still some costs, bubble wrap, cartons, security seals, packing tapes, label envelopes etc.), spend time taking detailed photos during packing, uploading the photos (so I can provide you with a weblink so you can see the packing in full detail), it takes too many hours to do all this. Also don't forget that ebay needs to take its commission so when you suggest a price I have to consider this.
At any case if you wish to make a counter offer just contact me.
Last not least just message me if you have any questions ! I would be very happy to answer as soon as possible.
Although I am a member in ebay in general for 3 years (please see also my other account: account: geokoug_97 in ebay.com ), you may see only few sales from me, as only recently I try with some items in ebay, I do have however many years presence in another European blue platform with too many sales and reviews so don't hesitate to buy from me just because I have sold few items in ebay.
