The United States Freehold Land and Emigration Company was established in 1869 to promote immigration to and settle the 500,000-acre Costilla Estate in Colorado and New Mexico, a massive landholding severed from the Sangre de Cristo grant. The company's history is also tied to a significant legal case, Tameling v. United States Freehold and Emigration Company, which the U.S. Supreme Court decided in 1877, affirming the company's land ownership rights to tracts within the Costilla Estate. ----
