- It was printed more than a dozen years before the Interstate Highway System changed the traveling habits of the American motorist, when there were no smoothly-paved limited-access high-speed motorways and no comfy chain motels. The roadside cottage industry was still flourishing along many rural routes, where any farmer or property owner with some minor construction skills and a bit of road-aligned land could build and outfit a few shacks to provide overnight accommodation and make some money from the traveling public.
